Mettler-Toledo has been a long-term winner, returning a 17% CAGR over the last 20 years. Driven by the pandemic bubble in MedTech and growth stocks, MTD accelerated its outperformance until reaching its peak in early 2022. Since then, the stock has gone down and sideways, letting the S&P 500 catch up.

We already established that MTD has a great and defensible business model in the first part of the analysis, but how efficiently is the company operated and can it repeat the past outperformance going forward after this 4 years consolidation phase.

Mettler-Toledo operates within attractive end markets that benefit from long-term structural trends. In life sciences and pharmaceuticals, increasing R&D intensity, stringent regulatory standards, and the growing complexity of drug development create persistent demand for the company’s precision instruments. In the food and beverage industry, rising consumer expectations for safety and quality, coupled with tighter regulatory oversight, support ongoing investment in inspection and quality assurance systems. Furthermore, the company’s solutions play a key role in global manufacturing and logistics, where automation and digitalization are driving the need for advanced measurement and data management systems. I detailed MTD’s positioning in the previous article.

Overall, the precision tools market (which is a much broader term than just MTD’s operating business) is expected to grow at mid single digits. Additionally, MTD’s automation, software and data solutions should grow faster. After expanding into food retailing (currently a single digit percentage of revenue), MTD is looking to expand into other verticals that require precision tools, like energy and semiconductors. Over time this should diversify revenue.

Given its exposure to structurally growing industries, its leadership in precision scales, and its disciplined approach to capital allocation, Mettler-Toledo offers a compelling long-term growth story. However, the key question for investors remains how efficiently the business is operated and whether its current valuation fully reflects these fundamental strengths or offers upside.

In the following section, we’ll analyze:

  • Capital efficiencies and reinvestment

  • How effective were buybacks?

  • How high do they score on my quality score framework?

  • Is the company attractively valued?
